Magic of Winter: A Scottish Legends Romance (Celtic Legends Collection Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 895 ratings

A beautiful reminder that letting go of the past can let the future bloom its brightest. Award-winning author Martina Boone spins a heartwarming modern love story about loss and hope, fathers and daughters, small towns, and big ambitions.

Cait Fletcher was always second-best in her father's eyes, unable to compete with her perfect older brother. Her father's opinion of her plummeted even further when she fell for the local "bad boy" at the age of nine. But Cait's belief in Brice MacLaren never wavered until he betrayed her a few months before their wedding.

Having left Brice, her father, and the tiny village in the Scottish Highlands behind, Cait never expected to find herself moving back again, but now her father's illness brings her home. She still hates the village full of opinionated neighbors, ancient grudges, and countless old traditions as much as she loves it. Everyone has advice for her, but where were they when her father decided not to treat his cancer and asked Brice to sell the family Library and Tea Room that was her mother's pride and joy? No one told Cait any of that.

Setting her feelings aside, Cait follows the example of generations of the women in her Highland glen and fights to save both her father and her mother's legacy. Unfortunately, that means working side by side with Brice.

Brice has spent years laying the groundwork for a second chance with Cait. He's done his best to take care of her father in her absence, as hard as the old man makes it. But he's always known winning Cait back would be a long shot. And before he can show her he still loves her, he must first prove she can trust him with her father, the family business, and her heart.

From the Author

Although I hope very much this book feels real to you, it is a work of fiction, and the setting is a fictional place based on a real one that I enjoyed visiting. The Balquhidder Glen in the Scottish Highlands captured my imagination from the moment I stumbled across the inconspicuous little road sign for Rob Roy MacGregor's grave while driving down the A84. The time that I spent in the glen was magical, and it is truly one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Because I didn't wish to do it a disservice, and because I needed to rearrange a few things to suit the story I was writing, I gave it a fictional counterpart in Lake of Destiny. Balquhidder is pronounced Balwhither, and so that's what I named the place where Lake of Destiny and Magic of Winter take place.
Officially, this is the third installment of the Celtic Legends collection. The stories are standalone, each complete in itself, but some of the characters are recurring and their lives continue. You'll find references to them as you read. For this reason, I do recommend starting with the first book, or going back to it to see where everything began. But you won't lose anything by reading out of order.

And now, for a brief note about Christmas and Hogmanay, which is the last day of the year in Scotland. I mention in the book that Christmas was not officially celebrated in Scotland for over 500 years, and didn't resume as an official holiday until 1958. Once Catholic, Scotland became Protestant after the death of James V in 1542 and the "rough wooing" of Mary Queen of Scots, who was eventually executed in 1567. That time saw what is called the Scottish Reformation, in which the country broke with away from the influence of the Roman Catholic church and developed a strong national and strongly Presbyterian "kirk," or church. Holidays like Christmas that were seen as predominantly Roman Catholic in influence were banned in 1560, as were older practices such as bonfires and particular types of song and dancing. Some of these reformations were taking place in other parts of Britain as well under the influence of Oliver Cromwell, but while the celebration of Christmas returned in England, it remained banned in Scotland. In contrast, Hogmanay, whose roots may go back as far as the celebration of the winter solstice, took on greater significance and became a major celebration with a host of its own traditions.

Balwhither Glen, of course, loves nothing more than a celebration, and its traditions are its own. In keeping with the winter solstice idea behind Hogmanay, I've revived the practice of burning old grudges in Magic of Winter. And while the book takes place in December around Christmas and Hogmanay, its themes of family, loss, hope, redemption, and renewal are a perfect reminder that good things can be just around the corner at any time of year.

I am not a romance novel reader! My taste generally goes to SF or fantacy this book sucked me right in and kept me reading. I was intensely impressed by the breath of sources for each chapter's opening quote. The author must have been saving these nuggets of English beauty all her life. Thank you Ms. Boone for a wonderful read!

"There’s more than enough places in the Highlands dedicated to glorifying men in kilts. I’ll make the Library and Tea Room a monument to Scottish women. It’s about time someone remembered who did the real hard work while the men were off raiding cattle or playing war."
That quote is why I love this series so much. Finally focusing on something besides men in kilts and actually focuses on the women and kids and the history of Scotland.

The third book in the Celtic Legends series (I have only read Bell of Eternity the second book) and I am very happy to say that they can all be read as a stand-alone, but side characters are also mentioned from the other stories.

After having already lost her mother and then going to her fiancee's Brice's house and seeing a woman leaving wearing his clothes she runs off to London and hasn't been back to the town since. With her father trying to keep her from coming home and not telling her the full story of things she decides to surprise him and comes home early for Christmas. Things aren't good at all her father is sick and has kept it from her and most of the town and has become a shut-in besides having Brice help him when needed. On top of that, her mother's beloved tea room and Library has closed and her father sold everything and is planning to sell the building as well. Cait is heartbroken and upset and wants to help, but isn't sure how because of how stubborn her father is. Brice helps as much as he can, and is also trying to prove to her that he has changed and is willing to do anything to get her back.

"It should have been different. She should have been different. The realization that nothing had changed, that she hadn’t changed, left her chilled."

Overall I really enjoyed this Christmas book. Cait is a little lost even though she has become a journalist in London and loves the work she does. She still hasn't truly dealt with the loss of her mom and with her dad encouraging her to stay away she hasn't returned home since and she hasn't talked to anyone else from home either. The amount of heartbreaking surprises waiting for her at home is a lot to deal with and she doesn't know exactly where to start, but she knows she must stay and bring back her mom's legacy, and help her dad get better again. With some help from the people in the town and Brice, she was able to start doing just that.

As for the love story part, I liked how things just didn't immediately get physical and how willing Brice was to show they he had changed and that he wasn't just going to let things go back to how they were. He truly cares for Cait, and Cait truly cares of him she just has some trust issues they are going to have to work through.

I also found it fascinating how until 1958 Scotland didn't celebrate Christmas and it was actually banned up to that point.

I can't wait to see whom we follow next in this series!

"Family was what Christmas was for, arguments and gifts and memories that all had meaning only because there was so much history and love behind them."

Thank you to the author for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

The best of the series so far. Their stories were interesting. I began to paint pictures of the landscape in my mind. I could imagine its beauty.

It felt so good to be back in Balwhither Glen… like having that wonderful feeling of coming home from a very long vacation and being comforted by everything that makes you happy. “Home is where the heart is,” and that’s how I feel whenever I read Boone’s stories.

“But that was the point of first love — trial and error, and learning to navigate the hardest and best and most important relationships of your life. “

Lake of Destiny is definitely still my favorite, but like Bell of Eternity, Magic of Winter had me intrigued until the end. I really love Martina Boone’s writing style and feel so connected with her stories and characters. It’s just so beautifully affecting, heartfelt and absolutely charming. Boone writes with so much passion and care, and it really shows in her novels. Granted, I’ve only read three, but they’re all so fantastic, riveting, and just magical. But hey, don’t take my word for it, just experience it for yourself and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

“But here in the glen, the winters are a reminder that, as bleak and dark as life can seem, we’ll get through it. There’s beauty in the worst of things.”

It goes without saying that I absolutely enjoyed the plot which was well-paced, engaging, and filled with heartbreaking and sweet tender moments. The romance was wonderfully slow burn and the swoons were plenty. I loved that even though this book wasn’t focused on the romance, there were still many scenes that melted my heart. The family dynamics were complicated and at times insanely dramatic, but so very interesting. I thought the community in the glen was just adorable. And the characters… they were amusing, realistic and utterly lovable. I honestly want to live in this world and meet all these amazing characters.

“She had loved him for most of her life, but somewhere along the line she had fallen in love with him in a single heartbeat, so quickly that she couldn’t name the moment or reason. Thinking of all the old doubts, the old fears, she realized that not one of them mattered. “

Cait was likable — smart, headstrong, and caring. Brice was such a sweetheart and so irresistibly swoony! I really enjoyed their chemistry and ached along with them throughout their struggles. I also admired everything they were doing for the people they love. But man oh man… the things Brice did for Cait was just so thoughtful, romantic and adorably sweet. I definitely fell hard for him. Actually…if I’m being honest, with these amazing male leads in the Celtic Legends Series, I’m not so sure I can pick a favorite. They’re all swoonworthy in their own charming ways.

“That was the other side of love, a promise that two people made to each other to weather whatever came, day by day and moment by moment. “

With a gorgeous setting, fantastic cast of characters you can’t help but love, intriguing family dynamics, a wee bit of romance to make you swoon, and moments that will make you smile and brighten your day, Martina Boone has created another beautiful and affecting story about family, friendship, second chances, hope and love. If Lake of Destiny filled my heart with so much happy, and Bell of Destiny left me positively satisfied, well…Magic of Winter lifted my spirits and inspired me to focus on the good and beautiful parts of life. So, when you think everything seems to be going wrong, just have faith cause there might just be a surprise waiting for you.

“Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come.”

I finished reading this book with a smile on my face and a wonderful feeling in my heart. On to the next book – Echo of Glory.

I received an advance copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. All thoughts, opinions, and warm fuzzies are my own.
